About Specialised Imaging

Targeted studiesfor specific questions.

This group brings together nuclear medicine studies that do not fit one organ system: finding hidden infection, mapping lymph drainage, and assessing glands and fluid pathways. Each is chosen for a specific clinical question.

Clinician reviewing lymphoscintigraphy images

Infection & lymphatic imaging

Labelled leukocyte and gallium scans help find infection, and lymphoscintigraphy and sentinel node mapping show how lymph drains from an area.

Glands, fluid pathways & surgical support

Salivary, lacrimal and cisternography studies assess function and flow, and gamma-probe localisation helps surgeons find a lesion.

Your doctor will advise which study is appropriate for your clinical question.

When It May Help

Supporting care across specialist questions.

Your doctor recommends imaging based on your clinical needs.

Sentinel lymph node images shown with SPECT-CT

Hidden infection

Labelled leukocyte and gallium scintigraphy can help locate infection or inflammation.

Lymph drainage & sentinel nodes

Mapping the first draining lymph nodes can help guide surgery, for example in breast cancer and melanoma.

Glands & fluid pathways

Salivary gland, lacrimal and cisternography studies assess function and flow where other tests are not enough.

Surgical guidance & dosimetry

Gamma-probe localisation supports surgery, and quantitative SPECT-CT supports therapy dosimetry.

Your Visit, Step by Step

    Check-in & review

The team reviews your referral and relevant medical history.

  2. 02

    Tracer & rest

A tracer is administered, followed by a resting period.

The exact process depends on your scan and clinical needs.

Before Your Visit

Preparing for your visit.Simple steps.

What to discuss with the team

  • Your referral & previous reports

Bring the referral and earlier imaging, pathology and surgical reports where available.

  • Coordination with your surgeon

For sentinel node mapping or intra-operative localisation, the timing is coordinated with the operating team. Confirm your surgery date when booking.

  • Blood sample or extra visit

Some studies, such as labelled leukocyte scans, need a blood sample or more than one visit. The team will explain this when arranging your appointment.

  • Special procedures

A few studies, such as cisternography, involve a different type of injection. The team will explain this to you beforehand.

  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding & allergies

Let the team know before your appointment.

FAQs

Common questionsabout these studies.

Answers to questions patients often ask before a specialised study.

Still have questions?Speak to our team for guidance before your visit.
  • Your own white blood cells are labelled with a tracer and then imaged after a delay, so the study is spread over more than one session. The team will plan the timings with you.

  • A tracer is injected near the lesion to show the first lymph node or nodes that drain the area. This helps the surgeon decide which nodes to remove or examine.

  • Sentinel node mapping and intra-operative localisation are timed around your operation. Tell the team your surgery date when booking.

  • The time varies by study. The team will tell you what to expect when arranging your appointment.

  • Nuclear medicine studies use a small amount of radioactivity and the team follows radiation safety practices. Tell the team if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or think you might be.

  • Your referring doctor will usually discuss the findings with you. Contact the team about when your report will be available.
